Counseling works

It's very well established that people start to feel better when they can talk things out. Friends and family can provide a sounding board, but they are not objective or trained to provide effective mental health care. It may be hard not to worry about being judged, gossiped about or given bad advice. Who can you trust? As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, I promise to safeguard your privacy while relying on tried and true methods to help you resolve the symptoms, problems, issues or concerns that brought you to me.

Getting Started

It's not easy to know where to find the best mental health care. Who do you call? What do you say? How will you know what is best for you? Finding a "good fit" with a counselor is essential to how effective your therapy will be.  It's so important that I offer a brief consultation with recommendations to help you decide. Once you contact me, we will communicate by phone or email so I can gather enough information to understand what you are experiencing, what you need and where to begin. I excel at helping people quickly sort out what's bothering them and what to do next. Whether or not you decide to continue counseling with me, I will provide you with  specific recommendations and resources so you can take the next step towards feeling better.   This community service is absolutely free with no obligation.

Traditional Counseling: An Office Appointment
This is what most people think of as counseling or therapy. (The words "counseling" and "therapy" are interchangeable). We typically start by meeting in person for weekly counseling sessions lasting about 50 minutes. As I develop a deeper understanding of your experience and perspective, I will share my expert opinion of your situation and approaches specifically chosen to help you resolve the symptoms, problems, issues or concerns that led you to seek counseling. Combining your existing strengths with my expertise, we will actively pursue the shortest path to achieving your goals and concluding therapy.
Online Counseling: Therapy Over The Internet
Sometimes office visits just aren't possible. Circumstances such as illness, lack of transportation, lack of childcare, and more can prevent you from keeping an appointment.Online therapy keeps growing in popularity now that research has  shown it is about equally effective as counseling in person (under the right circumstances).  My clients have the option to have appointments by phone or online through an easy to use and secure app. I have extensive training from The TeleMental Health Institute in the safe and appropriate use of online counseling, and am happy to offer this convenient option.

Individual Counseling or Therapy
I have provided effective counseling and care management help to many hundreds of people with a wide variety of problems. My orientation is person-centered, solution focused, cognitive behavioral therapy. I provide educational materials and help you build important skills you will use to manage difficult people and situations for the rest of your life. I also am trained in a technique called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessisng (EMDR) which is a very effective way of treating  trauma and it's effects. The more honest you are about describing what brings you to counseling at this time, the better I am able to choose which therapeutic interventions will be the most useful for you.

Interpersonal Issues
Many times, our stresses have something to do with the people in our lives, past or present. While I do not provide marriage counseling or family therapy, I can help you recognize problematic patterns and learn new ways to resolve conflicts, maintain healthy boundaries, etc.. I also specialize in helping people understand  themselves and each other better with respect to videogame and social media use issues.

Beyond credential and techniques, I genuinely care about my clients. I will:

  • be 100% present, giving you my full attention
  • listen to you with empathy, compassion and respect
  • comfort you if any difficult, painful feelings come up
  • help you understand the "problem" and what might be causing it
  • be interactive and directive with suggestions for you to try
  • work closely with you on a specific plan for change
  • suggest out of session reading or activities to maximize your gains
  • support, encourage and motivate you every time we meet

If you've read this far, I believe you have the courage to pick up the phone and call me. What do you have to lose?
